SUNDAY 24 FEBRUARY
*** Stories of the Twentieth Century ***
A baby, Selim Senai, is born at stroke of midnight at the very moment of India's independence. His life is bound up with the fate of the new nation, as he and his family become actors, even catalysts in the drama and madness of partition. Salmon Rushdie's novel, 'Midnight's Children', published in 1981, captured an era and brought magic realism to Indian literature. A great novel and momentous history, in Stories of the 20th Century.

This week on Curious Orange women in government: is the glass ceiling in Holland as unbreakable as ever, or are women making progress in politics?

Speaking of the fairer sex, we'll hear from a Dutch woman who travelled to the exact gravitational centre of each continent and has just published a book about the journey.

And, now that the rosy glow of Valentine's Day has worn off, we'll find out how one Dutch company is capitalising on divorce.

Our featured artists this week are from the Fatty Boom Project - a Dutch dance remix album that's just been released.

That's this week on Curious Orange.

Bart Moeyart - 'Kellerkatze'

The 43-year-old Flemish writer Bart Moeyart's contribution to Radio Books is called 'Kellerkatze' - German for cellar cats. The story is narrated by Harriet whose mother is the housekeeper of a chateau owned by a rich, noble family.

Harriet is visiting and staying in the basement of the chateau where her grandmother also lives. But things are not right. There's frenzied activity and the count presents to her mother an all-important cigar box. What's in the cigar box? And why is the house in upheaval? The suspense builds up in this tale of class and subordinance and you'll have to wait until the very end of the story to find out precisely why so much change is in the air.

As India's economy booms and businesses flock there for cheap labour and plentiful markets, we look at how far the concept of Corporate Social Responsibility has progressed in a country where the majority of the population is still deprived of the most basic amenities.

And a new way of totally sustainable living in Holland - a traditional houseboat, but fitted out with all the mod cons, that also caters to the new philosophy of clean ethical living.
